Oh received the nomination on her act as the character that is main “Killing Eve. “
The Academy of tv Arts & Sciences announced this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominees on morning thursday. Towards the shock of no one, shows like Game of Thrones, Westworld, and Handmaid’s Tale topped the menu of nominees, but one historic nomination endured down: Sandra Oh for Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Killing Eve).
Oh, who plays the eponymous Eve, could be the very very first Asian girl become selected for an Emmy in virtually any lead actress category within the award show’s history that is 70-year.
The Korean-Canadian actress is perhaps most commonly known on her supporting role when you look at the television series Grey’s Anatomy, which is why she received several Emmy nominations, but no victories.
Folks of Asian descent have already been historically underrepresented into the media. Hollywood has usually been criticized for whitewashing Asian figures, perpetuating unpleasant Asian stereotypes, and relegating Asian actors to supporting roles.

Despite a career that spans three years and lots of accolades, Oh, too, experienced such discrimination. In reality, whenever Oh first received the script for Killing Eve, she assumed she had been approached to play a character that is supporting maybe not the lead — she told Vulture in April. Oh stated she had been surprised when her agent informed her she had been tapped for the role that is lead.
“I think of that minute a whole lot. Of just going, exactly just how deep have I internalized this? ” she told Vulture. “i did son’t even assume whenever to be had a thing that i might be one of several central storytellers.
